Encouraging Women & Girls in STEM

Speaker: Dr. Louise Schaper

In our recent roundtable, we discussed strategies to encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM fields. Dr Louise Schaper emphasized the importance of role models and mentorship. By setting a passionate example and ensuring gender-balanced representation at conferences and within organizations, we can inspire more young women to enter and thrive in these fields. Mentorship is another crucial factor. Both male and female mentors play a significant role in supporting women through the challenges they face in their careers. Dr Schaper highlighted the importance of creating a support system where women know they can seek advice and guidance.

Balancing Security and Convenience in IoT

Speaker: Elizabeth Zalman

The intersection of security and convenience in IoT devices is a pressing issue. Elizabeth Joy Zalman discussed how consumers often prioritize ease of use, but this can lead to significant security vulnerabilities. We explored how to design security-first products that are as user-friendly as popular consumer apps like Fitbit. One effective approach is to ensure that every interaction with the device is secure without adding unnecessary complexity. Elizabeth emphasized that by making security an integral part of the user experience, we can protect consumers while providing the convenience they desire.

Smart Infrastructure and Autonomous Vehicles

Speaker: Sudha Jamthe

Building smart infrastructure to support autonomous vehicles presents both opportunities and challenges. Sudha Jamthe highlighted the need for public-private partnerships to fund and implement these projects. While governments may not have the resources to fully finance smart city initiatives, collaborations with private enterprises can bridge this gap. Cities like San Jose and Dubai are already pioneering innovative smart city solutions. By working together, we can create the infrastructure needed to support the future of autonomous vehicles and other smart technologies.

AI in Marketing

Speaker: Tamara McCleary

AI’s role in transforming marketing was a highlight of our discussion. Tamara McCleary emphasized that AI is already making a tremendous difference in the industry. From driving CRM systems to personalizing user experiences on websites, AI is not just the future of marketing — it’s the present. Tamara pointed out that the potential for AI to further revolutionize marketing is immense. By leveraging AI, businesses can create more tailored and efficient customer interactions, driving engagement and loyalty. The future of marketing is here, and it’s powered by AI.

IoT Security Risks

Speaker: Scott Schober

Security risks associated with IoT devices, including botnets and DDoS attacks, were a major concern in our discussion. Scott Schober advised consumers to prioritize security settings, such as changing default passwords and using encryption, to protect against these threats. Scott highlighted the importance of understanding the trade-offs between convenience and security. By taking proactive steps to secure our devices, we can mitigate the risks and enjoy the benefits of connected technology. It’s essential to stay informed and vigilant in the face of evolving cyber threats.

Cybersecurity in Autonomous Systems

Speaker: Kayne McGladrey

The discussion covered the potential for cyber criminals to exploit autonomous systems, such as self-driving cars and cargo ships. Kayne McGladrey explained that ensuring these systems have independent sensors and robust monitoring mechanisms is crucial to prevent malicious activities like GPS spoofing. Kayne noted that while the threat of cyber attacks on autonomous systems is real, we can take measures to safeguard against them. By investing in advanced security technologies and remaining vigilant against threats, we can protect our critical infrastructure and ensure the safe deployment of autonomous systems.
