The topic of sustainability is front and center on people’s minds, and we have reached a point where more and more organizations are realizing the importance of taking concrete action to drive sustainability. Gina Kirby, Senior Sustainability Specialist for the Americas at Microsoft, recently spoke with AskTheCEO Media CEO Avrohom Gottheil about how Microsoft’s Cloud for Sustainability is making a tangible impact in the world. Gina shared some real-world examples of how Microsoft’s customers are leveraging the platform to tackle environmental challenges and create a more sustainable future.

Grupo Bimbo:

One of the largest baking companies globally, Grupo Bimbo, is using Microsoft’s Cloud for Sustainability to support its environmental initiatives. By analyzing the platform’s data-driven insights, Grupo Bimbo can identify areas for improvement in its operations, including energy efficiency and waste reduction, and devise targeted strategies to reduce its environmental impact.

BBC:

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is another example of an organization leveraging Microsoft’s Cloud for Sustainability to drive sustainability goals. With the platform’s help, the BBC gains valuable insights into its environmental footprint and develops focused initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, conserve resources, and promote more sustainable practices across its operations.

Ingredion:

Global ingredient solutions provider Ingredion is using Microsoft’s Cloud for Sustainability to optimize its sustainability efforts. By utilizing the platform’s real-time data and insights, Ingredion can identify opportunities for improvement, such as reducing energy consumption, minimizing waste, and implementing sustainable supply chain practices.

FLSmidth:

FLSmidth, a global engineering firm that specializes in the cement and mining industries, is utilizing Microsoft’s Cloud for Sustainability to fulfill its mission of promoting sustainable productivity. By analyzing data from various sources using the platform, FLSmidth can develop more efficient and eco-friendly solutions for its clients, thus reducing the industries’ environmental impact.

Some of the case studies that we’ve done with some of our customers are across a variety of different industries and areas. Now, we have the work that we’re doing with our cloud for sustainability. And you might have seen some information out there already with our customers like Grupo Bimbo, who is a grocer. You might have seen our work with the BBC, or potentially Ingredion or FLSmidth. They are leveraging our Cloud for Sustainability platform to help them on their journey with obtaining additional insights and more enriched insights as they plot their path forward on their own climate journeys.

The Power of Collaboration in Driving Sustainability:

As these case studies demonstrate, Microsoft’s Cloud for Sustainability is enabling organizations worldwide to take concrete action toward a more sustainable future. However, meaningful progress requires collaboration and partnership. Microsoft acknowledges the value of working with a diverse partner ecosystem, which allows the company to tap into the expertise of various organizations and supplement and enhance its sustainability initiatives.

Other things that we’re doing across a variety of industries are more focused that might be related to, for example, a fleet management organization might be looking at things like Route Optimization, or how EVs will play a role in their future. We might be leveraging digital twins for organizations who are trying to get a better handle on what their real estate and facilities are consuming from an energy perspective and how they can make improvements. Sometimes it’s related to agribusiness or retail and really optimizing the supply chain and understanding what that looks like. Or it could be things as simple as we’re trying to make assessments of what is the feasibility for us to move from plastics to recycled packaging, and what insights can we derive from those things?

So, it’s really a lot of different areas across a variety of industries. We continue to work with our customers and our partner ecosystem. Again, we don’t purport that we know or we’re the experts in everything. And so, we have a really enriched partner ecosystem that we work with to help support and supplement all the things that we do.” — Gina Kirby on #AskTheCEO

Conclusion:

Microsoft’s Cloud for Sustainability is facilitating organizations’ transition from altruistic sustainability goals to real-world outcomes.
